Now, here’s what I call a great political ad. Maybe the best negative ad of 2012? Via TPM, in Florida, Republican congressman Alan West (not very much loved by Democrats) recently ran an attack ad about the 2003 arrest in a barroom fight of his Democratic opponent, Patrick Murphy.
Murphy’s response? An ad that tells voters that West was “criminally charged with violating the Uniform Code of Military Justice; found guilty of three counts of aggravated assault; and relieved of his command.” The ad tells voters that the Army report concluded: “West ‘performed illegal acts…merited court martial…faced 11 years in prison.’”
Ouch.
According to TPM:
West fired a handgun next to the head of an Iraqi policeman during an interrogation, and after first having the officer beaten. West said this was done in order to stop an impending attack on his unit, but no evidence of such a plan was found based on the policeman’s coerced confession.
The incident ended West’s military career but launched his political career, making him wildly popular among conservative activists, according to TPM.
Karma is not a bitch, it’s awesome.
